5 Tips On How To Keep Your Skin Healthy During The Summer Months
We get it, you managed to survive yet another miserably, cold, London winter. Being covered in turtlenecks, scarves, jackets and boots. Your skin was feeling dry, pale and unloved. So when London Summer came along your skin was crying for a dose of vitamin C. It starts off with wearing singlets – allowing your shoulders and arms to get a bit of sun, then a cheeky sunbake in the park or on your annual Summer holiday. You then might even fit in an occasional sun bed to boost your sun-kissed glow. Summer is a wonderful time of year; it gives us an opportunity to spend some time outside with friends and family doing the things we love. However, like most things that we want it life, sun kissed skin comes at a price and it’s your skin that has to suffer.
We are going to sound like a broken record, but sun damage can lead to short and long term damage to your skin. Need a recap?
Dry, dehydrated skin (which gives the appearance of wrinkles)
Yellow discolouration of the skin
Dilation of small blood vessels under the skin
Premature aging (do you want to look 55 at 40?)
Discolouration and marks
The hottest season of the year requires careful thought for your skin. Just being mindful can be a skin lifesaver. Below are The Beauty Clinic Fulham’s 5 tips on how to enjoy the Summer sun and keeping your skin healthy and happy at the same time.
1) Avoid the sun between 10am and 3pm.
We aren’t saying lock yourself inside and hibernate for the entire Summer period. It’s about enjoying the sun whilst being smart about it. The hottest part of the day is between 10am and 3pm. So plan outdoor activity either side of this. For example, a morning work out or play in the park with the kids, an afternoon late lunch with friends or even dine alfresco style in the early evenings. If it’s unavoidable (kids sports or weekend BBQ’s) dress appropriately covering your shoulders and face. You can still look fashionable whilst being sun safe – invest in a wide brim fedora hat, cat-eyed sunglasses and a light, linen shirt.
2) Don’t spray perfume on your skin in the Summer months.
Who would have thought the odd spritz of perfume could be harmful to your skin? An unusual one, but one to keep in mind in the warmer months. An ingredient in perfume called psoralen (found especially in citrus based perfumes) can actually stain your skin when the chemicals react in the sun. This is permanent staining too, so it’s something you want to avoid. We suggest spraying your clothes and hair rather then your skin when you are out in the sunshine.
3) Invest in your skin, it will thank you later.
If you’re a natural born sun-seeker and find you do spend a fair bit of time in the sun - it is vital to invest in your skin now. Invest in a monthly facial to help keep your skin hydrated and replenished. There is no point waiting until you see the sun damage and then start treating frantically. Get in now for as much preventable treatment as possible. Trust us, your skin will thank you in the years to come! We have a range of facials that are perfect for hydrating and helping soften lines. We have the CatioVital, which is a true anti-aging treatment that uses micro-currents to soften lines and wrinkles (visible and under the skin). We also have a Peel & Lift that is ideal to renew and revitalise sun soaked skin (a great skin recovery session when you return from vacation!). We can always assess your skin when you come in to advise you on what facial we think is right for you. The Body Polish is also a great idea to get monthly as it frees the skin of dead skin cells, while nourishing and softening the skin which leaves your skin silky smooth!
4) Embrace your own skin tone!
London is such a great city as it is full of diversity and a lot of Europeans (who are blessed with oil based, melanin rich skin), so they tan incredibly easily. For the English Rose’s out there, we can’t keep up with this – yet the amount of people trying and damaging their skin is frightening. Embrace your lighter skin, ladies! To give you reassurance, Google some celebrities who embrace pale skin (kick start with January Jones, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone or Rachel McAdams). Also choose colours to wear that compliment your skin. Rather than wearing pastels and whites, that will only wash you out opted for shades of camels, beige, khaki and slate greys.
5) Maintain a safe glow
We know a tan is an instant confidence booster, so spray tanning is a great solution. Lots of people shy away from self-tans and are scared off by the Oompa Loompa horror stories. Spray tanning has been around for a few years now, so the technology has advanced drastically. Many brands have mastered the exact colouring to ensure you don’t go orange (or smell like a coconut farm). We searched the globe (literally) for what we think is the best spray tan currently on the market. We found and use Beau Bronz Spray Tan, a British owned company that is completely odourless and certified using organic ingredients. They last for about 7 days, so are perfect for a special occasion or they can be maintained on a weekly or fortnightly basis all throughout Summer. We make sure we select the right colour for you to ensure it looks completely natural.
So there you have it! Hopefully you take a couple of points away from this. We know we sound like a broken record, but we know you will be thanking us later. One of the biggest regrets we hear from our clients is that they wish they took more care of their skin and didn’t sunbake. Words of wisdom we say!
